The Navy Yard Garden Association announces a Summer Solstice Celebration and Grand Opening of its unique dog themed sculptural exhibit in the Navy Yard’s Shipyard Park on Thursday, June 21, 2018 from 7PM to sunset. The public is invited to attend this free family friendly event.
The traditional start of summer will welcome Massachusetts sculptor Dale Rogers and his whimsical art exhibit, The Big Dog Show, consisting of twenty 8’ high by 10’ long steel sculptures on display from June 21 to September 10. The big dog sculptures will be installed throughout the Navy Yard in Shipyard Park, Boston National Historical Park, and the Harbor Walk.
The exhibit is hosted by the Navy Yard Garden Association in partnership with the Boston Planning and Development Agency, Boston National Historical Park, and National Park Service. A growing list of sponsors includes Bark Around Boston, Boston Harbor Cruises, Boston Dermatology and Laser Center, Crate Escape, Cut-Splice, D.C. Beane and Associates, Diversified Automotive, Garrick-Santo Landscape Co., Harborview at the Navy Yard, Legal Sea Foods, MGH Institute of Health Professions, Pier 6 Restaurant, 7-Eleven, Spaulding Rehabilitation Network, Spinelli-Hickey LLP, The Stevens Group, and USS Constitution Museum.
Award winning metal sculptor Dale Rogers, shown with his dogs in the photo below, believes, “Adding art to public landscapes can inspire people of all ages…invoke a thought, generate a conversation, and create a strong connection for people who view it. Historically, dogs have made positive and lasting impressions with people and I want The Big Dog Show to do the same.”
The exhibit will serve as a catalyst for additional programming, to be announced during the summer. A million people visit the historic sites of the Navy Yard each year, most in the summer months. The 20 majestic dogs located throughout the Navy Yard will enhance visitors’ Charlestown experience, invoking a sense of joy and discovery similar to that experienced with the city’s Tall Ships in summer 2017 and Play Me Pianos in summer 2016.
The Big Dog Show is designed for enjoyment by all ages. It is a perfect art exhibit for the Charlestown Navy Yard, a community celebrated as one of Boston’s most dog-friendly neighborhoods. Please join us for the grand opening of this special outdoor art exhibit 7PM on Thursday, June 21st. Enjoy delicious food truck offerings, hear music performed by Nevena Djordjevic, and attend a ribbon cutting ceremony with distinguished guests.
Come for the fun and stay for the sunset with spectacular views of Boston harbor. Walk, run, bike or boat to the Charlestown Navy Yard for a sculpture stroll along a delightful two mile route with family, friends and favorite dogs large and small.
