We were delighted recently to discover the internationally renowned Ronald McDonald House is now located a short walk from Shipyard Park in the Navy Yard. The organization opened 18 months ago in the Harborview apartment building on 1st Avenue. The Ronald McDonald House at Boston Harbor (RMHBH) has grown quickly in that time. It already consists of eleven fully furnished free housing units for young patients and their families who travel from all over the world to receive pediatric care at Boston’s world famous medical facilities.
In the short time the House has been open, guests have arrived from twenty-three states and ten countries, staying over 2,600 nights. The facility has had a 90% occupancy rate.
According to the organization, in addition to providing cost-free housing, RMH® at Boston Harbor also offers regular on-site activities in the Community Space, located steps away from the apartments, for guest families to enjoy. Events such as art therapy, pet therapy, and family dinners offer parents and children the opportunity to connect with other families who are undergoing similar difficulties. These activities and the sense of community that they build are instrumental in helping their guests to relax and focus on family during a difficult time.
Ellen Simmons, Director of Operations and Development, states that “We are working to put together a group in the Navy Yard to be our House ambassadors in the community. One of our struggles is the lack of awareness that we are here! Beginning in September we are kicking off a campaign, Share the Yard, to engage local businesses and community groups.” She also urges Navy Yard neighbors interested in visiting the House to have a tour or to learn about volunteer opportunities to please contact her at 617-398-6458 or visit www.RMHBostonHarbor.org
