Navy Yard

The Navy Yard is a significant historical site that illustrates aspects of the naval, industrial, and technological history of the United States. Today, the Navy Yard boasts historic resources including a section of the Freedom Trail and the USS Constitution Museum, as well as first quality open space, such as Shipyard Park and Menino Park.

The area is a hub for health care research and practice, including development and administrative affiliates of Partners Health Care, MGH Institute of Health Professions, and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. The “Yard” offers some of the best views of the Boston skyline, the city’s diverse shoreline, and the majestic Bunker Hill Monument.

Waterfront

Boston’s dramatic, boat-filled inner harbor is on gorgeous display from the Navy Yard.  The city’s more than 40-mile Harbor Walk extends alongside the Navy Yard for two beautiful miles, reaching from the USS Constitution’s berth to Menino Park’s imaginative public playground at the mouth of the Mystic River. City residents, visitors and tourists bicycle, walk and jog here on the Harbor Walk every day.

Shipyard Park

This charming and restful oasis contains nearly 12 acres of gardens and mature plantings, paved walkways, an award-winning industrial-inspired fountain, brick amphitheater, and comfortable benches attracting visitors year-round.

Shipyard Park is home to the Massachusetts Korean War Memorial,  and the Charlestown Navy Yard Ferry Terminal, which extends out from the south side of the park.

Childs Bertman and Tsekares (CBT) Architects and Carol R. Johnson Associates were commissioned to design the transition of the portion of the site not included in Boston National Historical Park from a working navy yard. They maintained the site’s industrial fabric, while also installing the twelve-acre rectangular Charlestown Naval Shipyard Park at the Navy Yard’s center.
